Preventative Oral Hygiene

At Notley Dental Care we offer preventative oral health care for children so that we can avoid tooth decay. Our aim is to build up trust with each child so that they will have a pleasant experience coming out from the dentist.
At each appointment our Hygienists and Therapists offer tooth brushing and flossing techniques for the children to learn and help to explain the causes of caries (tooth decay). At the end of the session, their clean teeth can be painted with fluoride varnish or gel according to the age of the child in order to harden the enamel thus preventing decay.

As adult teeth appear we offer Fissure Sealants to be placed. This is a plastic coating that is applied painlessly onto the biting surfaces of back teeth. It provides a smooth surface that is easy to keep clean and prevents a build up of bacteria filled plaque settling into the crevices of natural teeth causing decay.

How should I brush my child’s teeth?

  • Brush at least twice a day – First thing in the morning and before bedtime. If possible also brush after lunch and sweet snacks
  • Brush all the teeth, not just the front ones
  • Spend at least 2 or 3 minutes brushing
  • Use a brush with soft bristles
  • Change toothbrushes every three months

It is important for the child to understand that if the dental plaque is regularly removed, then their teeth will remain healthy.

What are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are white fluoride enriched plastic coatings that are painted onto the biting surface of the back teeth.

Why are Fissure Sealants recommended?

The top surfaces of the back teeth where the chewing takes place are not smooth and flat. They are cris-crossed with tiny hills and valleys called pits and fissures. These pits and fissures offer food remnants a place to lodge, making it possible for bacteria to adhere.
The bacteria multiply rapidly and adhere to the teeth as a sticky mass aggressively producing acid. At Notley Dental Care we offer our patients professional fissure sealants. With this, the posterior teeth can be protected for many years from attack of decay.

At what age would we advise Fissure Sealants?

The primary molars should have been completely erupted into the oral cavity with matured enamel. This usually happens around age 6-7yrs.

How are Fissure Sealants done?

The teeth ready to be fissure-sealed will be cleaned with an etching-gel and thoroughly rinsed with water.. Under absolute dry conditions a thin-flowing composite material will be applied onto the fissures, and with a special UV-lamp the composite would be hardened.

What is a Mouthguard/sports guard for children?

At Notley Dental Care we also provide sports Mouthguards for children. A mouthguard is a specially made, rubber-like cover which fits exactly over your teeth and gums, cushioning them and protecting them from damage.

When would I need a Mouthguard?

It is important to wear a professionally made mouthguard whenever you play sport that involves physical contact.

Where can I get a Mouthguard?

At Notley Dental care we are happy to make you a custom-made mouthguard, which will fit your mouth exactly and protect your teeth and gums properly.
