Sleepwell Anti Snoring Device

Snoring is the noise caused by the vibration of the soft tissue in your airway, but it is more than just a loud noise which leads to broken sleep for snorers and their partners. This can have a profound impact on our quality of life and also create real problems within relationships.

The good news is that we can offer a practical solution to the problem. Gizem, one of our dentists, is trained to provide Sleepwell, the most clinically effective dental type device for snoring. Sleepwell is a cost effective and long term snoring remedy. The device which is worn just for sleep, holds the lower jaw in its normal position (or advanced if necessary) reducing snoring.

High levels of patient comfort meant that during clinical trials over 97% of patients found Sleepwell an acceptable snoring remedy.

At Notley Dental Care we offer FREE Anti Snoring Consultations. Our Sleepwell  anti snoring treatments are available to patients in Guildford and Godalming areas and across Surrey.

What Is Snoring?

Snoring is caused by breathing through the mouth during sleep. It occurs when the throat relaxes and the tongue falls into the airway in the back of the throat causing a vibration in the soft tissue.

What Causes Snoring?

The vibration in the back of the throat is often caused when there is an interruption to the free flow of air through the nose and throat. The structures that may cause this disruption are:

  • Deviated Nasal Septum
  • Nasal Polyps
  • Nasal Turbinates
  • Abnormally relaxed muscles
  • A large tongue or tonsils
  • Excessive weight
  • The shape of the head and/or neck

How Do I Know if I Snore?

Because snorers are asleep while they snore, they’re usually unaware of their problem unless a spouse makes them aware. It may also be difficult for snorers to make a connection between snoring and daytime symptoms. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of daytime symptoms that may be red flags that snoring is disturbing your sleep.

What Daytime Symptoms Are Caused by Snoring?

Studies have shown that the lack of sleep caused by snoring has wide reaching effects such as:

  • daytime sleepiness
  • lack of energy
  • poor motivation
  • accidents related to driving whilst tired
  • higher stress levels due to fatigue
  • less effectiveness at work
  • reduced sex drive

What is Sleep Apnea?

As you may be aware, Snoring can be linked to other sleep related issues most commonly Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), up to 4% of middle aged men and 2% of middle aged women are affected. This is a condition where during sleep, the airway narrows to such a degree that breathing stops completely, this can happen for several seconds and several times during sleep. This disturbance to sleep can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness and other symptoms.

We provide comprehensive  care, prior to being provided with a Sleepwell device, you will be asked to complete a pre-screening questionnaire in order to rule out other issues such as OSA, if there is an indication that you could be at risk, Gizem will refer you for further investigation or arrange a private home sleep study.

How do I Stop Snoring?

Most people will hide their snoring problem or pretend that it doesn’t exist, but it can be a very serious condition. Sometimes snoring can be treated with changes in lifestyle, but when that doesn’t work, medical evaluation is necessary.

The four clinically proven snoring treatments are Mandibular Advancement Splint therapy, CPAP, Loosing weight and Surgery.

  1. Mandibular Advancement Splints are customised mouth pieces made for each patient to be worn at night time to treat snoring.

The Sleepwell is the most clinically proven, tailor made to offer maximum comfort & retention and allows the patient to adjust to optimize effectiveness. 'Boil and bite' mouthguards tend to be less effective than custom made appliances.

  2. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is the gold standard for sufferers of severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, There are many types of CPAP equipment and a number of CPAP products. CPAP treatment is not recommended for the treatment of simple snoring.

  3. Losing weight

Loss of weight can reduce or stop snoring and there are numerous other health benefits but it is a gradual process.

  4. Snoring Surgery

There are a number of snoring surgery options but they are not always successfull. We recommend this as the last option to stop snoring.
